Ranking: best Ecuador single-origin chocolate

In order to do a direct comparison and ranking, I retasted the 11 single origin chocolate bars made from Ecuador cacao we had reviewed for which the best before dates had not yet passed. After 3 iterations over the past two days, here are the results:

  1. Askinosie San Jose Del Tambo
  2. Kallari 75% Cacao
  3. Amano Guayas
  4. Kallari 70% Cacao
  5. E. Guittard Quevedo
  6. Mindo 77%
  7. TCHO Nutty 2.0
  8. Mindo 67%
  9. Republica del Cacao Manabi
  10. Kallari 85% Cacao
  11. Republica del Cacao Los Rios

  1. Tried most of these, with special interest since I live in Ecuador. My personal preference is for Kallari at the top of the list, though I find the vanilla masks the true character of the chocolate a bit. I´d follow all the Kallaris with maybe the Amano, then Askinosie, then Los Rios R del Cacao, then Mindo. Can´t speak for TCHO since I haven´t tried it. I work with R. del Cacao as I produce their filled chocolates for the stores here in Quito, and can´t say it´s my favorite, I can´t even say it´s outstanding...very middle of the road for me.
